We kick off the show with a couple of tracks from the Subhumans classic record Incorrect Thoughts (1980) before featuring a track from Gerry Hannah’s outstanding 2014 indie folk/rock solo release called Coming Home. I met up with Gerry at Arts Wells 2016, where he performed with his band the New Questioning Coyote Brigade. You can hear pt 1 of the extensive interview I recorded with this Canadian music legend on today’s show.

Lots of sweet new tunes in the 2nd half of the show, including rock n roll band The Hollowmen from New Zealand, as well as Mi-Sex, a classic Kiwi rock/electronica act who’ve release their first record in 30 years!

We kick off the show with the music of a kiwi transplant to the US.  Upon relocating to Portland, Oregon, the known Ruban Nielson released a track to an anonymous bandcamp profile in 2010. To his surprise the song had received comments from blogs and even Pitchfork within a couple of days. He soon after branded himself Unknown Mortal Orchestra and has to this date released three acclaimed albums. We begin with that original home-recorded track, ‘Ffunny Ffrends’.

This week’s special guest, singer-songwriter Tanya Gallagher hails all the way from Pensacola, Florida. I didn’t expect to hear a rich southern accent when I sat down to speak with Tanya recently in Williams Lake, BC. Tanya is currently based in Vancouver. She was first drawn there to record an EP with a recommended producer and stayed to pursue higher education. Tanya speaks of her fascinating story and plays an impressive new original acoustic track ‘Whiskey Hearts’.

  • Featuring an interview with music legend Ben Lee *

We have an extra special interview this week with music legend Ben Lee!  I got word that Ben was hosting an intimate house concert at a yoga studio on Commercial Drive this past weekend, and went along with a voice recorder.   Luckily Ben had a few minutes spare time post-gig for a quick chat.  The ups and downs of Ben’s story in music have been well-documented, since his auspicious beginnings at age 14 with the band Noise Addict and his subsequent solo albums.  In our chat today Ben speaks of how the music he consciously creates these days, and his charity work with the organization Inkarri, has been informed by his shifts in consciousness via explorations of eastern spirituality and plant-based medicines.

* Singer-songwriter Janaya Salmond LIVE in the CiTR studio *

This week’s extra special guest is a fresh face to Vancouver’s singer-songwriter scene – Janaya Salmond. Janaya comes from a musical family and has been surrounded by great songwriting all her life, as her father is a music producer. Janaya is a talented multi-instrumentalist and she chose to accompany herself on the show with an uncommon instrument known as a strum-stick. Tune in to hear Janaya soulfully execute two of her original compositions that will no doubt be on her forthcoming debut album!
