This week we begin by revisiting the theme song of this show – ‘(I’m) Stranded’ by The Saints! This classic Ed Kuepper/Chris Bailey composition was first recorded exactly 40 years ago to the day I’m recording this show! It came out as an initial run of 500 7″ singles in September of 1976. We air the track in full as well as the brilliant b-side ‘No Time’. We follow up with a brand new track from Ed Kuepper who has been a prolific force in the world of Australian independent music since the Saints disbanded after three classic albums.

Lots of quality new Canadian music this week including a new single from Jay Arner and two stunning new artists – Alexandria Maillot of BC and Marlaena Moore from Alberta. We also introduce listeners to a spirited World Fusion group from the Okanagan called Barefoot Caravan.

* Featuring singer-songwriter Zeb Pigott-Duggan LIVE in studio *

Believe it or not, The Boss himself,Bruce Springsteen, has recently recorded a cover of the 1986 classic by The Saints ‘Just Like Fire Would’!  It’s on his new album High Hopes.  I’m not sure what Bruce’s association with Chris Bailey is but it must be an intriguing series of events that led to this huge star paying homage to an Australian punk legend. Internet sources note Bailey may pocket $500,000 in royalties!

Zeb Pigott Duggan is our special studio guest this week.  He is playing a show at the Railway Club next Friday night along with David Roy Parsons and myself!  Zeb, who grew up playing traditional Irish music with his father,  time spent many years performing vocals and violin with Vancouver band The Next Hundred Years.   He speaks today of growing up in Vancouver in the 1980s, and performs three very emotionally-resonate tunes solo acoustic.  MG

* Featuring the classic ‘Paralytic Tonight, Dublin Tomorrow’ EP  by The Saints (1980) and a LIVE phone interview with Jack and Lisa from Gabriola Island band SHED *

I stumbled across an essential CD box-set at Zulu Records the past week containing the first three  records from the second incarnation of The Saints following their split with EMI.  Chris Bailey soldiered on and formed a new band in London, England and immediately recorded the ‘Paralytic Tonight, Dublin Tomorrow’ EP, which you can here in full today’s show!  Taken from the box-set liner notes:  ‘This is the sound of somebody that wants to/has to make records rather than fulfill a release schedule…It is raw, the sound rough, open and passionate.’

This week is our second feature on the upcoming Red Jam Slam, a celebration of First Nations musicians and spoken word artists, that is taking place in Vancouver on 14 February.  Today we feature two new tracks from the upcoming second album by SHED from Gabriola Island, who are playing the Slam (the rollicking ‘Last Call’ is a must hear!). And joining us on the phone for a chat is husband and wife team Jack and Lisa – guitar/vox and drums respectively – of this wonderfully eclectic band.
