* Singer-songwriter Mark Martyre LIVE in the CiTR studio *

Today’s special guest Mark Martyre has literally just landed in Vancouver from his home town of Toronto.  Mark is an established and prolific singer-songwriter with three quality albums under his belt.   His music is lyrically-rich and his well-crafted folk tunes are supported by a weathered voice reminiscent of Tom Waits or even fellow-Torontonian Eamon McGrath. Tune in to hear three fantastic acoustic tunes and listen to Mark speak of his life in the music world of Toronto. Vancouver can expect to see him playing live shows in due course!

* Interview with storyteller Naomi Steinberg *

Today’s special guest is professional storyteller Naomi Steinberg.  We’ve interviewed poets and other spoken word artists on the show before, but Naomi brings a whole new perspective on what it means to connect to the heart through the age-old technique of story-telling.  Naomi speaks about the mentorship she received at the start of her story-telling journey, and the work she has done in the local arts scene.  And Naomi has certainly found the right show to come in and chat on, as she is about to embark on a trip to Australia, in the cargo hold of a ship!  Melbournites will be able to enjoy Naomi perform once she reaches the shores of Victoria.

* Featuring the space-rock opera ‘Children Of The Sun’ by Billy Thorpe *

One of my favourite things to do is to purchase an Australian vinyl record on my travels here in Canada, that I can then play on ‘Stranded’.  I recently discovered a record I’d never heard of but have since discovered it’s regarded as somewhat of a classic – ‘Children Of The Sun’, by rock legend Billy Thorpe.  Billy began his musical career at the tender age of 9 and went to front a 60s British-invasion style pop group, The Aztecs, which morphed into a loud, bluesy beast of a band that is most famous for the hit ‘Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy’.  In 1976 Billy made the plunge into the US market and found himself initially ignored by a country who had no idea that he was more-or-less the king of rock n roll in Australia.  The resulting record, ‘Children Of The Sun’ (1979), actually ended up charting in the US.  You can hear some of the wild ‘space rock’ sounds of this concept record on the show today.  MG

Nunchukka Superfly is the long running side project of Blackie and Ray who are two thirds of the legendary Sydney-based punk band Hard-Ons. I recently re-discovered their sonically abrasive and wonderfully off-kilter 2006 record ‘There Are No Accidents Just F*ckwits’. You can hear a few tracks from this classic release on the show.

Next up are three experimental/ambient acts – White Poppy, Pan and Magneticring – who are playing at the Big Joy Festival in Vancouver this weekend.

2013 was a big year for Australian music overseas with a strong SXSW contingent and notable tours. Courtney Barnett, Jagwar Ma and Pond have all been noted on England’s NME magazine end of year wrap-up. You can hear tracks from all three of these buzz acts on the show today. And we wrap up the show with tracks from the three finalists of Shindig 2013 – Zen Mystery Fogg, Skinny Kids and War Baby. Get on down to the Railway Club next Tuesday night if you’re an indie-music loving Vancouver local!
