Adelaide hard-core legends The Mark of Cain have just announced a rare tour of Australia to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut record Battlesick. I highly recommend fans of heavy music go check out the tour because I can attest to The Mark of Cain being perhaps the most powerful live band i’ve seen. We air the title track off Battlesick this week along with two tracks from later period records. And in keeping with heavy theme of the show, we also air tracks from Saskatchewan-based metal bands Altars of Grief, Into Eternity and Untimely Demise, which are all taken from albums featured on the Sask Music The Best Saskatchewan Albums of 2018 list.

* Interview with storyteller Naomi Steinberg *

Today’s special guest is professional storyteller Naomi Steinberg.  We’ve interviewed poets and other spoken word artists on the show before, but Naomi brings a whole new perspective on what it means to connect to the heart through the age-old technique of story-telling.  Naomi speaks about the mentorship she received at the start of her story-telling journey, and the work she has done in the local arts scene.  And Naomi has certainly found the right show to come in and chat on, as she is about to embark on a trip to Australia, in the cargo hold of a ship!  Melbournites will be able to enjoy Naomi perform once she reaches the shores of Victoria.

* Featuring an interview with Alex Alegria, director of the Mariachi Festival Canada *

Chris Basarba of Basone Guitars has been filling me in of late about the history of Vancouver punk and hardcore and one of the bands he’s recommended is Sparkmarker.  I tracked down an archived recording of Sparkmarker playing ‘Live At Thunderbird Radio Hell’ on CiTR in 1991 and you can hear the song ‘Courage’ from this session at the top of the show.

This Saturday Vancouver plays host to the Mariarchi Festival Canada.  Alex Alegria, founder  of the festival, phones through today to inform the listeners about the origins of Mariarchi music in Mexico and to tell of his journey from busking as a new immigrant in Vancouver, to leader of Mariachi Los Dorados and hard-working festival director.

Sadly, one of Canada’s most impressive indie bands, The City Streets, is calling it a day, but not before releasing their swan-song LP ‘Pretenders’.  You can hear three tracks from this record on the show today.  MG
