* Featuring a retrospective on The Church *

Here on Stranded we periodically re-visit the exquisite and arguably peerless musical back catalogue of legendary Australian band The Church.  And it’s fitting this week given the band, who have been recording masterworks of lyrically-evocative guitar-driven psychedelia since 1980, are embarking on a North American tour in support of their 25th album ‘Further/Deeper’, which includes a date in Vancouver on 21 Feb!  A contingent of hard-core fans have expressed dismay with the departure of founding guitarist Marty Willson-Piper but it’s clear from listening closely to the new record, that replacement Ian Hague (formerly of Powderfinger) has very ably stepped in to fill Marty’s formidable shoes.

* Featuring tracks by Cub, Feedtime, The Church and more *

I had a chance meeting at CiTR radio today with Robynn Iwata, vox and guitar with the band Cub who were one of the early flagship bands of Vancouver’s venerable Mint Records label (thanks for the introduction Nardwuar!). Cub helped pioneer the jangle-guitar pop punk that became known as ‘cuddlecore’. You can hear a couple of Cub songs at the start of the show as well as tracks from their one of their contemporaries, Maow, featuring a young Neko Case.

A highlight of the second half of the show is the debut single from Vancouver’s Ashley Shadow. Ashley has been a part of many projects in the past, most notably as bassist for The Organ. This stunning song showcases her remarkable voice prowess.

* Halloween 2014 *

Happy Halloween 2014! We start the show with a handful of older Australian songs that have a loose Halloween theme – firstly three songs with ‘blood’ in the title, followed by three songs with ghost in the title! The remainder of the show features brand new Canadian music, including tracks from Jordan Klassen, Angie Inglis and more.

* Featuring tracks from the seminal ‘X-Aspirations’ LP by X *

This week we explore the early sounds of seminal underground Australian punk band ‘X‘ (not to be confused with the equally significant American band of the same name’. The classic incarnation of this edgy Sydney institution featured the monstrous bass-work of rock and roll outlaw Ian Rilen and the powerfully expressive Steve Lukas on vocals. Ugly Pop records have recently released the’ X-Spurt’s LP which is a set of songs recorded by the band in the front room of someone’s house in Western Sydney in 1977. Amazingly, the tapes were lost for decades until someone discovered them in storage. Included in this session was a version of perhaps X’s best known song ‘Degenerate Boy’, which we air in the show today. This is followed by three tracks from the classic ‘X-Aspirations’ LP from 1979, which has also been re-released recently on Ugly Pop.
