* Featuring tracks from Stan Rogers, Bruce Cockburn & Ocean Leaves  *

A mixed-bag of new and old tunes on the show today.   We start out on a world music flavour with a few tracks from the ‘Rough Guide To Canadian Music’ CD compilation that I picked up at a truck stop for $2 – old folkie Stan Rogers, the legendary Bruce Cockburn and renowned fiddler Natalie McMaster.  We air ‘Skin’ by Ocean Leaves as well as the brand new single ‘Vanishing Man’ by The Church, in anticipation of their upcoming North American tour.  And we also feature tracks from Jacqueline Dawn who is performing at the next Stranded Sunday Session this coming Sunday 8 Feb at the Railway Club in Vancouver!

* Interview with Tim Hart of Boy and Bear *

Today’s interview is with Tim Hart, drummer of Australian band Boy and Bear. He calls through from his hotel in Edmonton, AB where the band had just arrived after playing SXSW in Austin, TX. Boy and Bear have made a name for themselves internationally on the strength of their lush atmospheric pop songs, and a popular cover of the Crowded House classic ‘Fall At Your Feet’. Tim speaks fondly of his connection with Canadian audiences, as well as filling us in on the origins of the band, and his eagerly anticipating an upcoming tour of regional Australian townships.

* Including a feature on Kiwi band Shihad *

Shihad are certainly the most significant alternative rock band to emerge from New Zealand.  With over 1500 shows under their belt, 8 world-class full length releases and multiple accolades in their home country, it’s still a wonder why the rest of the world hasn’t caught onto the excitement they’ve been generating, on stage and off, in the Southern Hemisphere for over 20yrs.  I have vivid memories of witnessing the band play some blistering live shows in small clubs in Australia.

Remarkably, I discovered a copy Shihad’s original vinyl release ‘Devolve’ in the CiTR library.  Only 1000 of these were released in 1990 and I can’t imagine there are many laying about in Canada.  So today I play a track from that punishing metal release (which brought the band early attention from and shows supporting Faith No More and Anthrax).  I then play some highlights from some of Shihad’s earlier releases, up to the ‘Pacifier’ album which was recorded for the band’s bittersweet attempt to capture the admiration of audiences in the US.   MG
