Stranded podcast #179

December 10, 2013

Nunchukka Superfly is the long running side project of Blackie and Ray who are two thirds of the legendary Sydney-based punk band Hard-Ons. I recently re-discovered their sonically abrasive and wonderfully off-kilter 2006 record ‘There Are No Accidents Just F*ckwits’. You can hear a few tracks from this classic release on the show.

Next up are three experimental/ambient acts – White Poppy, Pan and Magneticring – who are playing at the Big Joy Festival in Vancouver this weekend.

2013 was a big year for Australian music overseas with a strong SXSW contingent and notable tours. Courtney Barnett, Jagwar Ma and Pond have all been noted on England’s NME magazine end of year wrap-up. You can hear tracks from all three of these buzz acts on the show today. And we wrap up the show with tracks from the three finalists of Shindig 2013 – Zen Mystery Fogg, Skinny Kids and War Baby. Get on down to the Railway Club next Tuesday night if you’re an indie-music loving Vancouver local!

* Featuring tracks from the Sub Pop records re-issue of albums by Australian post-punk/pub rock band Feedtime *

We’re back after a two week break!  The CiTR Radio sports broadcast truncates the show again today but we still have an hour to feature some great tunes.  First up is three tracks from the recent Sub Pop Records re-issue of the four albums recorded by post-punk band Feedtime who were extant during the 1980s.  The heavy, distorted guitar tones of Freedime directly influenced the Seattle grunge scene which later developed.

We also feature another band from AAA Records in New Zealand called Mice On Stilts,, as well as The Eternal Husbands who are the ambient project of Matt and Rick, formerly of The City Streets.  We wrap up the show with three of the acts that have made it through to the CiTR Radio Shindig competition, and a track from The Ruffled Feathers who are starting to play live shows again in Vancouver after some time off.
