* Featuring D.O.A *

Given it’s May Day today, it’s fitting to return to the music of D.O.A. Joe Keithley formed this politically aware and now long-running hard-core band in 1978. And as you will hear from the two tracks we play from their recent live album ‘Welcome To Chinatown’, the current version of the band is as blistering as ever. The years have also not diminished the power of Keithley’s progressive lyrical attack. Keep an ear out for more new music from D.O.A before the year is out.

And it’s New Zealand Music Month!  So we kick off the celebrations with two new tracks apiece from established Kiwi bands Scalper and Shihad, and introduce listeners to quality new AAA Records signing Radioglo.

* Interview with Charalee Graydon, author of The Judgement Game’ *

We kick-off the show today with tracks by The Chills and The Verlaines, from the classic ‘Dunnedin Double‘ EP, the original double LP lo-fi recording that put the Flying Nun [NZ] record label on the map, way back in 1982.  The fresh sounds of four bands with no prior recording experience, were captured by Chris Knox, using a simple 4 track recorder, in modest spaces like lounge-rooms. The recording was out of print for many years before returning to shelves in a limited run for Record Store Day 2014.

We conclude the show with a thought-provoking departure from our usual programming.  Author Charalee Graydon joins us to discuss her debut book The Judgement Game, before the book’s official launch at Chapters in Victoria next Monday.  Charalee has a professional background in the practice of criminal law and academia.  She has created an interactive book with fictional scenarios, which ask for the reader’s ideas about offences committed by the protagonists and suggestions as to punishment imposed on offenders.

* Featuring an interview with Kris and Shannon from Vancouver band Blackberry Wood*

We kick off the show with the lead track to the self-titled release by Polly, the latest solo project from Vancouver music scene veteran Paul Leahy.  I highly recommend catching this guitar hero and brilliant tunesmith in live action!  Seminal Melbourne punk band The Meanies are up next, with a play-through of their ‘Just What You Need’ 7″, which I discovered in the CiTR record library.  Another 7″ to come for another show.

Gold Fields and Vance Joy are two Australian acts passing through Vancouver in the next month.  Stay tuned for ticket giveaway opportunities in upcoming shows.

Our special guests today are frontman Kris and newcomer bassist Shannon, from Vancouver-based alt-country gypsy band Blackberry Wood!  Along with some choice cuts from Blackberry Wood’s two official high-energy releases, you’ll hear Kris and Shannon joyfully reveal some fascinating tales of life on the road, including the remarkable series of events that led to the band being invited to play at the Glastonberry Festival in England….

CJ of Discorder Radio took the time this week to interview members of Tinpan Orange, from Melbourne, Victoria, who are playing the Vancouver Folk Music Festival this weekend.  You can hear his spirited and finely-edited piece at the top of the show.  Thanks CJ for your wonderful contribution!

Legendary blues singer, Dalannah Gail Bowen is a also performing at this weekend’s festival.   Today she phones through to re-visit some of the moments of her extraordinary life story, including her days in the mid-60s Winnipeg scene that included the youthful Neil Young and Randy Bachman.  Dalannah’s commitment to social justice activism is also well documented and today she speaks specifically about her involvement in the recent fight to keep the Rainer Hotel open.
