* Daniel Martin of the Goatboys LIVE in the CiTR studio *

It’s fitting to revisit the sublime creative work of Nick Cave as he is returning to Vancouver with the Bad Seeds in a matter of days.  We start the show with a couple of lesser-known album tracks from the early days of the band’s career, as well as two more recent singles.

Another passionate guitar-slinging local artist makes the long #99 bus trip down Broadway to the studio today to chat and play some tunes.  Daniel Martin, originally from Ontario, fell in love with the nature and lifestyle of the West Coast and has made wide-ranging musical contributions through a number of projects, including party-rock and festival favourites The Goat Boys.  Daniel’s songwriting prowess is evident through today’s performance which includes the song ‘Fool’s Gold’, based on the true story of a canoe trip to an isolated part of Canada’s north…

* Featuring NOMEANSNO *

NOMEANSNO are a truely one–of-a-kind band and an alternative Canadian institution. The Wright brothers, on bass and drums, formed the nucleus of the band in 1979 in Victoria, BC and developed their unique sound and sensibility before the addition of a guitarist. Lytically they have never feared to enter taboo territory and intelligently shed light on the nature of the human condition and political topics, without being preachy. You can hear a small handful of tracks from the band’s lengthy recording career today. You can also hear me read excepts from the invaluable book ‘NOMEANSNO: Going Nowhere’ by super-fan Mark Black, which is part of the Bibliographic series from Invisible Publishing.

Also on the show are tracks from the debut release by Vancouver group Spring, as well as two Australian artists who are making the trek to the 2014 SXSW Festival in Austin, TX.

*Happy holidays!*

The Fauves are a hidden gem of Australian independent music.  Having played 1000s of shows since 1988 and mastering a potent blend of catchy alternative rock tunes with clever and at times cynical lyrics, the Fauves deserve far more accolades than their modest record sales have provided.  The ’15 Minutes To Rock’ documentary, following the band on the road from 1997 to 1999, is a wonderful snap-shot of an uncertain period in their career when they were preparing their major label followup and feeling the strain of touring.  You can hear a 5min segment of the film on the show!

* Featuring a tribute to the late Stompin’ Tom Conners and tracks from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in anticipation of the North American tour for the ‘Push The Sky Away’ LP *

Legendary country and western musician and Maritimer, Stompin’ Tom Conners , passed away in March of this year, leaving a legacy of over 300 songs, many of which chronicle his extensive travels throughout Canada.  He became a musical icon through the strength of his story telling and tunes referencing Canadian historical events.   For instance ‘The Martin Hartwell Story’ – which we play on the show today – is about a pilot who survived 31 days in the Northwest Territories, after resorting to cannibalism.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds return to North America this week in support of  ‘Push the Sky Away’, the band’s 15th official full-length.  Today we play ‘Jubilee Street’, the latest single from the album, after visiting the anarchic days of the Birthday Party, and small selection of earlier Bad Seeds tunes, including a haunting cover of ‘Hey Joe’.

Rounding out the show are brand new tracks from Melbourne’s Henry Wagons, featuring Robert Forster of the Go-Betweens on the track ‘I Still Can’t Find Her’, and the first single from Renny Wilson’s album ‘The Sugerglider’, out now on Mint Records.
