Double J radio in Australia is a great source of quality new music. I ran across an article on their website recently called ‘9 Australian bands from the 2000s worth revisiting’ and we’re playing three of these acts a the top of show – The Sleepy Jackson, The Red Sun Band and my personal favourite who i remember seeing live in concert, Rocket Science, featuring theremin-wielding, wild front-man Roman Tucker!

Lots of great new music on the show, as always, including renowned Australian songwriter Darren Hanlon and a track from The Valery Trails, a unique band who have more recordings than live performances under their belts given that part of the band lives in Australian and the other in Houston, Texas.

  • Featuring an interview with indie-folk act Ocean Leaves *

This is another week where our special guest has a connection to both Australia and Canada.  Timothy Poitras is a Canadian national who married an Australian and settled in the Blue Mountains region in NSW.  Listeners may recall we interviewed Timothy in 2013 when he had released his first EP under the name Ocean Leaves.  Timothy has since relocated to Brisbane, where he has fleshed out the Ocean Leaves sound with a full band, and together they have recorded the ‘Winter Heart’ EP.  According to the band’s press release ‘the first single, Yellowknife, is a lush, spooky ballad about longing and the darkness it can create inside you.’  You can hear that impressive track on the show today as well as Timothy speaking enthusiastically about this new collaborative phase of his musical life.

* Acoustic musician Tom West LIVE in the CiTR studio *

This week marked the end of the very long running ‘Late Show with David Letterman’. One of the regular features that made the show so appealing was the regular world class musical acts that played. About a dozen Australian acts were fortunate enough to perform on the show over the years and we kick off the show this week with recordings of three of the featured acts – INXS, Midnight Oil and The Vines!

Our musical guest this week is Adelaide-based acoustic musician Tom West! Only a year ago Tom made the courageous decision to leave a career as a lawyer to pursue his music full-time and this has led to his first mini show-case tour of some key Canadian cities. Tune in to hear three wonderful acoustic tracks and Tom chatting about his songwriting process.
