May is New Zealand Music Month! To celebrate we devote the first half of the show to some stellar Kiwi tunes including classics from Neil Finn, Shihad and Dimmer. And we introduce listeners to two contemporary acts – Sunset 71, a modern rock band from Auckland with some epic hooks, and The Prophet Hens from the perennial musical hotbed of Dunedin who have just released their second record on Fishrider Records.

If you tuned in last week you would have heard a track from the new Blocktreat album ‘Exciting New Adventures In Fucking Up.’ This week we speak with Brandon Hoffman aka Blocktreat in person! Brandon speaks to the unique bluegrass/electronica inspiration of his project, and life as an independent musician based in the Cariboo region of British Columbia.

* Featuring an interview with Toronto-based Aussie hip-hop artist NoTiOn *

Last weekend I attended the Nettwerk Records moving sale and loaded up with some rarities including a press promo EP for the 2002 Neil Finn album ‘One All’.   The EP features live acoustic tracks, interspersed with highlights of an interview that was recorded with Neil at a Los Angeles radio station.  A track from Neil’s talented son Liam follows.

Neil Finn is an example of an artist who was deeply influenced by an older brother (Tim), when he was forming his musical sensibilities in New Zealand.   This is very similar to today’s interview – Toronto-based Aussie hip hop artist Notion.  In podcast #155 we interviewed Notion’s older brother Craig (Cee).  On today’s show Notion reveals more of the story of how two hip hop loving Australian brothers made their way to Eastern Canada, where they have overcome the odds to build a loyal following in both Montreal and Toronto.  Here’s looking forward to a west coast visit from the boys…

Also on the show are tracks from SHED who are releasing their latest record on Gabriola Island this weekend, and mi’ens, a new project from Kim of Vancouver band Reverter!

Neil Finn – ‘Driving Me Mad’ [NZ]
Neil Finn – ‘Turn and Run’ (live) [NZ]
