* Featuring an interview with Steve from Melbourne noise/punk band Useless Children *

Tonight my home recording project M.Lund is supporting some fantastic local musicians!  First up on the show you can hear Reef Shark, Collapsing Opposites and Ruffled Feathers who play Astorino’s in Vancouver this eve.

Earlier this year I had a chance encounter with Steve, the bassist of Melbourne-based punk band Useless Children who were playing at a basement show in Vancouver while on tour of the West Coast.  We had a great chat in the backyard and agreed to connect again on the phone for an interview.  Today you can here Steve speak about the recent tour, his bands uncompromising sound and his connection to legendary fuzzed-out Australian band Magic Dirt and their singer Adalita

* Featuring an interview with Australian blues musician Ash Grunwald in anticipation of his 15 August show at the Media Club *

Last night at a house show I had a chance meeting with Steve, the bassist of Melbourne-based punk band Useless Children, was passing through town on a west-coast tour. I was blown away by the intensity of the performance in a cramped Vancouver basement, and I was delighted to hear the influence of Magic Dirt, in the powerful overdriven guitar work.  Steve revealed his devotion to Magic Dirt, and his enthusiasm re-invigorated my own love of this seminal band from Geelong.  Today on the show I play the entire ‘Signs Of Satanic Youth’ EP from 1993, before airing the brand new single for front woman Adalita.

The well-travelled Australian blues musician Ash Grunwald phones through today to speak about his new record Garganuta, which features the musical powerhouse of Scott Owen and Andy Strachan of  The Living End on bass and drums.  Ash speaks about the evolution of his experimental electronica-influenced blues style.  He also reveals his passion for raising awareness of significant environmental issues through the avenue of his music.  Catch Ash Grunwald live at the Media Club in Vancouver on 15 Aug!

And we end the show with a brief tribute to Canadian Aboriginal folk musician Willie Dunn who passed away this week in Ottawa.  RIP.

* Featuring tracks from Geelong’s Magic Dirt and an interview with Vancouver poet Weldon Gardner Hunter, reading from his latest anthology ‘The Stella and Pony Years‘ *

We periodically revisit Magic Dirt on the show because this seminal band from the industrial city of Geelong, fronted by the gorgeous and explosive Adalita Srsen, is just so damn rockin’!   You can enjoy two tracks today from their brooding and heavily distorted debut full-length from 1996, ‘Friends In Danger.’

Weldon Gardner Hunter is a rare breed of poet.   While embedded in the academe, where he is completing a PhD, Weldon maintains a practice of composing poetry from the heart, which documents his life in the city of Vancouver.  These poems have been compiled into the delightful anthology ‘The Stella and Pony Years’ (2012).  Above all else, Weldon desires these poems be shared with friends (my copy of ‘…Pony Years’ is currently my go-to reading for lthe long 99 bus ride).

And Weldon has many friends in the independent music scene of Vancouver, which makes him an extra-stimulating guest for this show.  Today, Weldon reads selections from ‘The Stella and Pony Years’ which is available online and locally at Pulp Fiction Books.  Weldon also spins tunes from local acts Menopause and Family video, who feature the musical contributions of prominent indie locals Nicole Caron and Jeff Johnson respectively.
