Kangaroo Valley-based singer-songwriter Andy Gordon is returning to tour BC in September! You may recall we recorded an insightful interview and live acoustic set with Andy last year in which he describe the conception and recording of his incredible album New Albion. The songs on the record are based on the interactions between Australia’s First Peoples and the British settlers. We re-broadcast part of that interview on the show this week.

Lots of great new music for the remainder of the show including a track from new Vancouver two-piece Old.Soul.Rebel, and debut single from Vancouver art/rock band Douse, who you may know under their previous name Alea Rae. I had the pleasure of seeing Northern BC-based one-man-band The Alkhemist play last weekend and I grabbed a copy of the record he recorded as a two-piece while living in Haida Gwaii, under the name Shadows Cast.

Featuring an interview w/singer-songwriter Tanya Gallagher

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – ‘Ffunny Ffrends’ [NZ]
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – ‘From The Sun’ [NZ]
Chris Knox – ‘Meat’ [NZ]
Larissa Tandy – ‘Harder Heavier’ [AU]
Mick Harvey (feat. Xanthe Waite) – ‘Don’t Say A Thing’ [AU]
No Sister – ‘Overpass’ [AU]
Tanya Gallagher – ‘Planes, Trains and Buses’ [CA]
Tanya Gallagher – ‘Whiskey Hearts’ [CA]
Coolfog – ‘Summer Mix’ [CA]

We kick off the show with the music of a kiwi transplant to the US.  Upon relocating to Portland, Oregon, the known Ruban Nielson released a track to an anonymous bandcamp profile in 2010. To his surprise the song had received comments from blogs and even Pitchfork within a couple of days. He soon after branded himself Unknown Mortal Orchestra and has to this date released three acclaimed albums. We begin with that original home-recorded track, ‘Ffunny Ffrends’.

This week’s special guest, singer-songwriter Tanya Gallagher hails all the way from Pensacola, Florida. I didn’t expect to hear a rich southern accent when I sat down to speak with Tanya recently in Williams Lake, BC. Tanya is currently based in Vancouver. She was first drawn there to record an EP with a recommended producer and stayed to pursue higher education. Tanya speaks of her fascinating story and plays an impressive new original acoustic track ‘Whiskey Hearts’.

* Interview with Rose Henry and Kristofer Lee Scott LIVE in the CiTR studio *

This week’s special guest is local singer-songwriter Kristofer Lee Scott! This is Kristofer’s second time on the radio (his first time was with his previous Kelowna-based band that he used to drum for). Kristofer moved to Vancouver less than a year ago to teach Primary School, and he has already enthusiastically embraced the city’s open-mike culture, and he is playing the Stranded Sunday Sessions #9 at The Railway Club!

And in anticipation of next week’s National Aboriginal Day, in the last 1/2 hr of the show we are joined by regular guest First Nations activist Rose Henry! Rose fill us in on what she’s been up to lately in the world of activism and she introduces a brand new track from the legendary Buffy Saint-Marie.

* Featuring tracks by Cub, Feedtime, The Church and more *

I had a chance meeting at CiTR radio today with Robynn Iwata, vox and guitar with the band Cub who were one of the early flagship bands of Vancouver’s venerable Mint Records label (thanks for the introduction Nardwuar!). Cub helped pioneer the jangle-guitar pop punk that became known as ‘cuddlecore’. You can hear a couple of Cub songs at the start of the show as well as tracks from their one of their contemporaries, Maow, featuring a young Neko Case.

A highlight of the second half of the show is the debut single from Vancouver’s Ashley Shadow. Ashley has been a part of many projects in the past, most notably as bassist for The Organ. This stunning song showcases her remarkable voice prowess.

* Melbourne-based performer Larissa Tandy LIVE in the CiTR studio *

Today we invite onto the show extra special guest, singer-songwriter Larissa Tandy! Larissa is fixture on the world-class Melbourne music scene, as a performer and booking agent and she has recently relocated with her Canadian partner to Vancouver, BC.  Larissa has built a strong following back home with her work with the vocal harmony-infused, roots/indie cross-over act Strine Singers (which also features her brother Ryan).  That band has a long-awaited full length in the works, and in the mean time Larissa is keen to showcase her solo work with fresh audiences in Canada.  You can hear Larissa perform three lyrically-rich original songs live in the CiTR studio, as well as a selection of tunes from some of her favourite contemporary Melbourne-based acts.
