  • Featuring an interview with music legend Ben Lee *

We have an extra special interview this week with music legend Ben Lee!  I got word that Ben was hosting an intimate house concert at a yoga studio on Commercial Drive this past weekend, and went along with a voice recorder.   Luckily Ben had a few minutes spare time post-gig for a quick chat.  The ups and downs of Ben’s story in music have been well-documented, since his auspicious beginnings at age 14 with the band Noise Addict and his subsequent solo albums.  In our chat today Ben speaks of how the music he consciously creates these days, and his charity work with the organization Inkarri, has been informed by his shifts in consciousness via explorations of eastern spirituality and plant-based medicines.

* RIP Todd Serious of The Rebel Spell *

This week marks 30 yrs since the release of Ed Kuepper‘s debut album ‘Electrical Storm’. We open the show with the album’s epic title track, followed by a track from the classic 1990 album Today Wonder and his acoustic reworking of The Saint’s classic ‘Brisbane (Security City).’

There is sad news to report this week as well. Todd Serious, front man of socially-conscious Vancouver punk band The Rebel Spell, was found dead last weekend following a tragic rock-climbing accident. We pay respect to Todd with two tracks from The Rebel Spell’s final two masterworks – ‘It’s A Beautiful Future’ and ‘Last Run’. RIP.

* Featuring interviews with music publisher Steve Thompson and Hip-Hop artist Miss Ekko 1 *

The world of music has changed considerably since the early 2000s. No longer does it make sense for independent artists to wait expectantly for a major label to scoop them up and transform their lives.  Rather, it is crucial for independent artists to utilize the great tools available on the world wide web, and to build a trustworthy support team.  Today on the show, music publisher Steve Thompson educates us about the importance of artists attending to the administrative side of their music so that they can benefit from revenue streams that come from registration with SOCAN.

Hip-Hop artist Miss Ekko 1 phones through as well to give her opinion on having a music publisher as a component of an independent artist’s team. Miss Ekko 1 is not only passionate about her art, but also for supporting her peers in a myriad of ways, including educating them about their rights.

And we wrap up the show with tracks from three of our favorite local artists, including Jeff Johnson’s longstanding project OK Vancouver OK, who are releasing their ‘Food, Shelter, Water’ LP this weekend!
