Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are back with their 16th full length titled Skeleton Tree. Early reviews indicate this is one of Nick Cave’s most powerful and emotionally resonate statements to date. The band were already ensconced in the studio when the tragic news broke of the death of Nick’s son following a falling accident.  Thus, the resultant record is infused with an unexpected poignancy. We start the show with two older Nick Cave tracks before airing the stark ‘Jesus Alone’ from Skeleton Tree.

In the second part of the show we feature new tracks from Aussie acts Liz Stringer, Megan Bernard and rockin’ Melbourne-based two-piece This Way North. We air part two of our interview with BC-based outlaw country singer Joey Only and finish up with a fascinating ambient/experimental piece by Montreal’s Chris Strickland, from his Animal Expert record.

* Kristina Lao + Beaver Thomas LIVE in the CiTR studio *

We kick off this week’s show with a few songs from British Columbia’s favourite anarchist country singer Joey Only! Joey was in Vancouver this week for a triumphant homecoming show with his Outlaw Band at the historic Wise Hall.

And much of the show is devoted to showcasing the tunes of UK-based singer-songwriter Kristina Lao. Kristina, who spent some years living in both Australia and New Zealand, is visiting family in Vancouver and has time to join us this coming Sunday night for The Stranded Sunday Sessions #4 along with Leah Barley and M.Lund. Her exquisite vocals and literate songwriting are well displayed as she shares three original compositions LIVE in the studio (and a John Prine cover). And she is joined in the studio by new friend and guitarist Beaver Thomas, also of the John Pippus Band.

And we wrap up the show with the brand new single ‘Outta My Head’ from Australian musician Travis Caudle, which has been released by Spinning Blue Records.

* Greg, John and Meshe from the ‘Love Is My Alibi’ compilation LIVE in the CiTR studio *

Today we are joined in the studio by sound artist Greg Molesky, who has created a quality compilation of local singer-songwriters called ‘Love Is My Alibi’.  Greg’s idea was to ask some of his friends to pen a tune using the line ‘Love Is My Alibi’ as a lyric.  He was pleased to receive contributions from Greg Valou, Heidi McGurdy, John Buchanan, Theda Phoenix, Kelly Haigh, Terry Townson and Meshe.  Meshe and John were both available this evening and they join us in the studio to perform live with acoustic guitar, vocals and percussion!

* Featuring LIVE music from Vancouver band The Savoys *

We have another quality local band on the show today – The Savoys!  With a debut EP just released online, thanks to the production assistance of local legend Felix Fung (who has likened The Savoys to Aussie band The Twerps), this good-natured four-piece is gearing up to show Vancouver, and beyond, what they have to offer.  You may already know them under the name Days of Heaven.  Their name change coincided with the addition of new drummer Barnaby who immigrated to Vancouver from his native Peru less than a year ago.  Listen in to a solid live set and a brief chat with this great new Vancouver band.
