  • Featuring an interview with music legend Ben Lee *

We have an extra special interview this week with music legend Ben Lee!  I got word that Ben was hosting an intimate house concert at a yoga studio on Commercial Drive this past weekend, and went along with a voice recorder.   Luckily Ben had a few minutes spare time post-gig for a quick chat.  The ups and downs of Ben’s story in music have been well-documented, since his auspicious beginnings at age 14 with the band Noise Addict and his subsequent solo albums.  In our chat today Ben speaks of how the music he consciously creates these days, and his charity work with the organization Inkarri, has been informed by his shifts in consciousness via explorations of eastern spirituality and plant-based medicines.

* Featuring an interview with Rick Reid of Eternal Husbands *

An extra special guest phones through to chat this week – Rick Reid, guitarist, vocalist and lyricist of Montreal-based two-piece ‘fog pop’ band Eternal Husbands!  Rick and bassist Matt Leddy are well known to Stranded and the Canadian independent music world as two-thirds of The City Streets who formed in Edmonton in 2005 and released a number of top-notched records until they disbanded in 2013. Rick and Matt have explored a new sound with the new band, incorporating synths and an expansive, layered approach to their recording. Album #2 ‘French Exit’ is out now. Catch Eternal Husbands on tour this summer and you won’t be disappointed!

* Interview with Saskatoon-based artist Dumb Angel *

Today’s special guest, Shaun Mason – aka Dumb Angel – calls all the way from Saskatoon, Sk! Dumb Angel plays atmospheric, layered music that is self-described as ‘spacey, melodic and confessional’ (Videos and Venues blog).  Shaun speaks of the Prairie origins and initial Beach-Boys inspiration of his project, as well as his time in Montreal where he first connected with Matt and Rick from The Eternal Husbands.  You can hear tracks from the brand new Dumb Angel record called ‘Broken Glass’ (out now on Clamour Records), as well as Shaun’s recommendations of other great Saskatoon bands.

* Interview with storyteller Naomi Steinberg *

Today’s special guest is professional storyteller Naomi Steinberg.  We’ve interviewed poets and other spoken word artists on the show before, but Naomi brings a whole new perspective on what it means to connect to the heart through the age-old technique of story-telling.  Naomi speaks about the mentorship she received at the start of her story-telling journey, and the work she has done in the local arts scene.  And Naomi has certainly found the right show to come in and chat on, as she is about to embark on a trip to Australia, in the cargo hold of a ship!  Melbournites will be able to enjoy Naomi perform once she reaches the shores of Victoria.

* A mixed-bag of mostly Cancon *

It’s a slow-paced summer holiday edition of the show this week. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of great live studio guests ahead! We start the show off with two tracks a piece from New Zealand indie legends Graeme Downes (The Verlaines) and Dimmer, featuring Shayne Carter of the groundbreaking Straightjacket Fits.

The remainder of the show is dedicated to catching up on some fantastic new Cancon, including the brand new New Pornographers single!
