Stranded podcast #242

April 6, 2015

* Featuring Lime Spiders *

We kick off the show with a few blistering singles from 80s underground legends Lime Spiders (you can find ’25th Hr’ and ‘Out Of Control’ on the indispensable 2 x CD compilation ‘Do The Pop’).  Lime Spiders, led by singer Mick Blood, were in operation primarily from 1979 until 1990.  They didn’t release their full-length, the classic ‘The Cave Comes Alive!’ until 1987 after years of honing their live act in the beer barns of Australia. Their sound is distinctive for the time in that they were powered by punk and almost metallic riffing, but also drawing on the influences of psychedelic and Nuggets-era American rock.  The resulting musical concoction was exhilarating.

* 2013 Vancouver Folk Festival special featuring interviews with legendary blues singer Dalannah Gail Bowen and Tinpan Orange from Melbourne, Victoria *

CJ of Discorder Radio took the time this week to interview members of Tinpan Orange, from Melbourne, Victoria, who are playing the Vancouver Folk Music Festival this weekend.  You can hear his spirited and finely-edited piece at the top of the show.  Thanks CJ for your wonderful contribution!

Legendary blues singer, Dalannah Gail Bowen is a also performing at this weekend’s festival.   Today she phones through to re-visit some of the moments of her extraordinary life story, including her days in the mid-60s Winnipeg scene that included the youthful Neil Young and Randy Bachman.  Dalannah’s commitment to social justice activism is also well documented and today she speaks specifically about her involvement in the recent fight to keep the Rainer Hotel open.

And we welcome CiTR Radio Board Chairperson Janis McKenzie into the studio to help wrap up the show.  Janis has lots to say about her decades-long commitment to this amazing radio station and she shares some fabulous local Vancouver music from past and present.  Come back soon Janis!

* Featuring live studio guest First Nations teacher and musician Larry Hanson, who is performing at the Red Jam Slam event at the Interurban Gallery in Vancouver on Feb 14 *

I had the fortune to travel to Seattle, WA this week to see the great Australian singer-songwrier Paul Kelly live in concert at the Triple Door, and interview him backstage at soundcheck!  You can look forward to hearing the interview at an upcoming show but for now you can enjoy two tracks from Paul’s beautiful 19th album Spring and Fall, which is a return to stripped-back solo acoustic music.

This year’s Red Jam Slam event, organized by Gunargie O’Sullivan of Co-op Radio is coming up at the Interurban Gallery in Vancouver on Feb 14.  The event features a host of First Nations musical and spoken word talent, including today’s studio guest, Larry Hanson.  Larry, who has a degree in history from UBC, is an adult education teacher and musician who recorded his debut full-length album in 2010.  Today Larry speaks about his work as a teacher and the Idle No More movement and plays tracks from his record ‘Rez Warriors’. Larry’s wife Helen also joins us and speaks about her valuable work helping to preserve the language of her people through First Voices.
