  • Featuring an interview with indie-folk act Ocean Leaves *

This is another week where our special guest has a connection to both Australia and Canada.  Timothy Poitras is a Canadian national who married an Australian and settled in the Blue Mountains region in NSW.  Listeners may recall we interviewed Timothy in 2013 when he had released his first EP under the name Ocean Leaves.  Timothy has since relocated to Brisbane, where he has fleshed out the Ocean Leaves sound with a full band, and together they have recorded the ‘Winter Heart’ EP.  According to the band’s press release ‘the first single, Yellowknife, is a lush, spooky ballad about longing and the darkness it can create inside you.’  You can hear that impressive track on the show today as well as Timothy speaking enthusiastically about this new collaborative phase of his musical life.

* Kristina Lao + Beaver Thomas LIVE in the CiTR studio *

We kick off this week’s show with a few songs from British Columbia’s favourite anarchist country singer Joey Only! Joey was in Vancouver this week for a triumphant homecoming show with his Outlaw Band at the historic Wise Hall.

And much of the show is devoted to showcasing the tunes of UK-based singer-songwriter Kristina Lao. Kristina, who spent some years living in both Australia and New Zealand, is visiting family in Vancouver and has time to join us this coming Sunday night for The Stranded Sunday Sessions #4 along with Leah Barley and M.Lund. Her exquisite vocals and literate songwriting are well displayed as she shares three original compositions LIVE in the studio (and a John Prine cover). And she is joined in the studio by new friend and guitarist Beaver Thomas, also of the John Pippus Band.

And we wrap up the show with the brand new single ‘Outta My Head’ from Australian musician Travis Caudle, which has been released by Spinning Blue Records.

* Featuring tracks by Sydney band The Whitlams as tribute to the passing of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam *

This past week marked the passing of the 21st Prime Minister of Australia – Gough Whitlam. He was 98 years old.  Gough was PM from 5 December 1972 – 11 November 1975.  During this period he enacted a wide range of progressive policies, including free health care and university education, Aboriginal land rights and the establishment of the publicly-funded 2JJJ radio, which became the much-loved institution JJJ.  He even inspired the formation of a band – The Whitlams, formed by songwriter/pianist Tim Freedman, and the late Stevie Plunder and Andy Lewis.   We play three early Whitlams’ songs today, including their ‘theme song’ of sorts called ‘Gough’ which references the famous and controversial ‘dismissal’ of Gough as PM, by the Governor General, on Nov 11 1975.
