* Featuring interviews with Vancouver musician Joseph Hirabayashi and Canadian ex-pat Ocean Leaves *

It’s time to explore songs from seminal Canadian bands, and what better way to do so than by spinning the new compilation of the book ‘Have Not Been The Same: The Canrock Renaissance 1985-1995’.  We start with Vancouver band Slow who are underground legends who it is believed inspired bands that emerged from the Seattle grunge scene.   More history to come in future weeks…!

Joseph Hirabayashi is a highly respected multi-instrumentalist, music teacher member of Vancouver bands Aunts & Uncles and SPRING (formerly SSRIs).  We speak to Joseph on the phone today about is rock operetta contribution to this weekend’s musical event Spatial Poetics XII: Release Me – an evening of experimental and collaborative performances by an eclectic line-up of Asian Canadian artists.

The Australian part of the show begins with tracks from Brisbane band The Bloodpoets before our second interview, this time with Timothy Poitras, a singer-songwriter who operates in Australia under the name Ocean Leaves.  Timothy grew up in Ontario and relocated to Queensland four years ago, before marrying and finally settling down in the Blue Mountains, NSW.  Timothy reveals his musical and cross-oceanic journey today and we air tracks from his debut EP ‘Always Is The Time To Make Everything’.   With such strong Australian/Canadian connections, Ocean Leaves seems born for ‘Stranded’!

* Featuring a mix-bag of great new Cancon tunes *

I recently discovered a curious compilation LP in the CiTR record library that is perfect for the show -‘Beyond The Southern Cross – A Compilation of Indie Recordings from Australia and New Zealand’.  ‘Beyond The Southern Cross’ was released as a double vinyl album by Ink Records (INK 4D) in 1984 and features tracks by notable underground bands who were active in the late 70s/early 80s.  We play from the compilation two tracks a piece by Tactics and legendary Flying Nun band The Clean, from New Zealand.

The remainder of the show is dedicated to showcasing recent releases by a superb crop of Canadian independent artists, many of who have recently been touring extensively throughout Canada, and even Scandinavia for Jenny Ritter.  Brave Parents is the hypnotic new project from Shane Turner who has recently relocated from Vancouver to Toronto.  Another real treat today is two tracks by Eamon McGrath from the Pegasus sessions of demo recordings that were recorded during the autumn of 2011, prior to last year’s last year’s Young Canadians.

* Featuring an interview with Francesca Mountfort, cellist from Nervous Doll Dancing [NZ] and Pt III of Sara Lapsley’s interview with Pete and Donal of Vancouver glam/punk band Scratch Bastard *

This week the third CD release from Franscesca Mountfort, a classically-trained cellist from Wellington New Zealand, landed in my mail box at CiTR radio.  Francesca, who performs under the name Nervous Doll Dancing, is presenting her highly original show, Eidolon, this Friday and Saturday night at Havana Restaurant on Commercial Drive in Vancouver (get there early for dinner!).  Nervous Doll Dancing is currently a duo, featuring the mesmerizing musicality of Mountfort on cello, accompanied by an innovative visual projection of puppetry and illustration by Tom Hume. Today you can hear my interview with Francesca, in which she speaks about her relationship with her instrument and describes the hypnotic cinematic soundscape that is Nervous Doll Dancing.

In last week’s show, Sara Lapsley shared the first two parts of her interview with Pete and Donal from legendary Vancouver glam punk band Flash Bastard. Their debut record ‘Rock n Roll Must Be Destroyed’, was recorded in 2000 for Nikki Sixx’s label Americoma, but never saw a release as they were dropped from the label. Flash Bastard re-recorded the album and it is finally seeing a 2012 release. Part III of Sara’s interview with these affable rockers airs today, along with some more tunes to help get you in the groove for the album’s UK release and, hopefully, future touring.

Today I’m playing some tracks from indie-pop stalwarts Jebediah – two singles from their 2011 release, ‘Kosciuszko’ – their
fifth full-length since forming in Perth, WA in 1994.  You can also hear a track from Melbourne grunge-rockers Arcane Saints who are playing the British Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Vancouver on 22 Sept, as well as three bands from the Safe Amp Society Compilation 2012.
