* Featuring D.O.A *

Given it’s May Day today, it’s fitting to return to the music of D.O.A. Joe Keithley formed this politically aware and now long-running hard-core band in 1978. And as you will hear from the two tracks we play from their recent live album ‘Welcome To Chinatown’, the current version of the band is as blistering as ever. The years have also not diminished the power of Keithley’s progressive lyrical attack. Keep an ear out for more new music from D.O.A before the year is out.

And it’s New Zealand Music Month!  So we kick off the celebrations with two new tracks apiece from established Kiwi bands Scalper and Shihad, and introduce listeners to quality new AAA Records signing Radioglo.

* Featuring an interview with Steve from Melbourne noise/punk band Useless Children *

Tonight my home recording project M.Lund is supporting some fantastic local musicians!  First up on the show you can hear Reef Shark, Collapsing Opposites and Ruffled Feathers who play Astorino’s in Vancouver this eve.

Earlier this year I had a chance encounter with Steve, the bassist of Melbourne-based punk band Useless Children who were playing at a basement show in Vancouver while on tour of the West Coast.  We had a great chat in the backyard and agreed to connect again on the phone for an interview.  Today you can here Steve speak about the recent tour, his bands uncompromising sound and his connection to legendary fuzzed-out Australian band Magic Dirt and their singer Adalita

* Featuring Edmonton-based kirtan singer Sparrow Deviyani Brulotte LIVE in the CiTR studio *

Sparrow Deviyani Brulotte took time out of her busy touring schedule, over a year ago, to pop into CiTR and chat about her life that is deeply immersed in the performance of kirtan singing.  We’re finally airing this interview and live set because Sparrow is about to release her kirtan album ‘Sharanam’ in November of this year.  Kirtan is call-and-response chanting using Sanskrit mantras from the east-Indian yogic tradition.  Sparrow incorporates these mantras into her songwriting to create a powerful blend of the universal and personal in her art and performance.
