More from The Meanies! This week we play through the entire ‘In Search of…’ EP from 1992. Perhaps you’ll fall in love with their infectious off-kilter melodies and cutting riffs like I did many years ago. They’re certainly not the most prolific band (no full length recordings since ’93) but you could still catch them playing shows in Melbourne to this day.

Gold Fields are playing Vancouver next Saturday night at Fortune Sound Club. We did some on air ticket giveaways on the show today and during the week, the first 3 people to email ozstranded@fastmail.fm can also receive free tickets to the show!

I’m excited to air a track from the debut EP from Irish ex-pat Amergin.   I met Amergin at an open-mike a number of months back and I was really taken with his heart-felt acoustic tunes.  At that point he’d not recorded anything despite having a plentiful supply of self-penned numbers.  He finally texted me today with news that he had finally recorded his debut EP!  Keep an eye out for Amergin at upcoming shows in the city of Vancouver…

The Meanies – ‘Wonderland’ [AU]
The Meanies – ‘Monopoly Money’ [AU]
The Meanies – ‘Once Again’ [AU]

* Featuring an interview with Kris and Shannon from Vancouver band Blackberry Wood*

We kick off the show with the lead track to the self-titled release by Polly, the latest solo project from Vancouver music scene veteran Paul Leahy.  I highly recommend catching this guitar hero and brilliant tunesmith in live action!  Seminal Melbourne punk band The Meanies are up next, with a play-through of their ‘Just What You Need’ 7″, which I discovered in the CiTR record library.  Another 7″ to come for another show.

Gold Fields and Vance Joy are two Australian acts passing through Vancouver in the next month.  Stay tuned for ticket giveaway opportunities in upcoming shows.

Our special guests today are frontman Kris and newcomer bassist Shannon, from Vancouver-based alt-country gypsy band Blackberry Wood!  Along with some choice cuts from Blackberry Wood’s two official high-energy releases, you’ll hear Kris and Shannon joyfully reveal some fascinating tales of life on the road, including the remarkable series of events that led to the band being invited to play at the Glastonberry Festival in England….

* Featuring an interview with Australian blues musician Ash Grunwald in anticipation of his 15 August show at the Media Club *

Last night at a house show I had a chance meeting with Steve, the bassist of Melbourne-based punk band Useless Children, was passing through town on a west-coast tour. I was blown away by the intensity of the performance in a cramped Vancouver basement, and I was delighted to hear the influence of Magic Dirt, in the powerful overdriven guitar work.  Steve revealed his devotion to Magic Dirt, and his enthusiasm re-invigorated my own love of this seminal band from Geelong.  Today on the show I play the entire ‘Signs Of Satanic Youth’ EP from 1993, before airing the brand new single for front woman Adalita.

The well-travelled Australian blues musician Ash Grunwald phones through today to speak about his new record Garganuta, which features the musical powerhouse of Scott Owen and Andy Strachan of  The Living End on bass and drums.  Ash speaks about the evolution of his experimental electronica-influenced blues style.  He also reveals his passion for raising awareness of significant environmental issues through the avenue of his music.  Catch Ash Grunwald live at the Media Club in Vancouver on 15 Aug!

And we end the show with a brief tribute to Canadian Aboriginal folk musician Willie Dunn who passed away this week in Ottawa.  RIP.
