* Featuring a special on National Aboriginal Day 2012, including interviews with Rose from Redsoulbluez and Victoria homeless activist Rose Henry *

On Thursday June 21, Canada celebrated National Aboriginal Day.  In the previous week I was fortunate to see  Aboriginal blues musician and Juno Award winner, Murray Porter, play live in Vancouver.  Supporting Murray was a brand new project called Redsoulbluez and I interviewed Rose from the band.  She speaks about what it’s like to be an Aboriginal musician in Canada today.  I was also privileged to interview highly respected activist Rose Henry of Victoria, BC.  On today’s show you can hear Rose explain the importance of the decolonization movement and the urgent need for more equitable treatment of First Nations Canadians by government.

In today’s show I also feature some classic tracks from Australian Aboriginal musicians and feature a rising star of contemporary Aboriginal music, Benny Walker.  You’ll also learn about some historical and contemporary issues relating to Australian Indigenous people’s struggles for social justice and self-determination.  Much respect to the Coast Salish people of the Vancouver region and the Ngunnawal people of the Canberra region where I grew up in Australia.  MG
